INEQUALITIES THROUGH THE MOUTH
For decades, feminist movements have fought for women’s political, economic, and cultural freedom. But as a TikTok trend has shown, we can fight gender inequality every day, even on our own. The trend began in January, when Molly Barrie posted a video inviting people to share their “subtle displays of power”—and it wasn’t long before the video went viral on the platform.
While feminist movements have gained a lot of attention in places like the United States and the United Kingdom in recent years, fewer than 1 in 5 women in those places would call themselves “feminists.”
They may not feel the term applies to them, given the stereotypes and misconceptions associated with feminism (“feminists don’t wear makeup, don’t shave their legs, and hate all boys”). But Nyomi is happy with the direction the movement is heading: she believes that today’s feminists are more progressive and intersectional than ever before. “I am very impressed with the young feminists of today.”
